The Pioneer is a durable, differential-drive robot for academic researchers. The Pioneer%u2019s versatility, reliability and durability have made it the most popular differential drive mobile robot in academic research for years. Unlike hobby and kit robots, Pioneer is ready to use, and will last through years of tough classroom and laboratory use.

pioneer p3 dx for researchThe base Pioneer 3 DX platform arrives fully assembled with motors with 500-tick encoders, 19cm wheels, tough aluminum body, 8 forward-facing ultrasonic (sonar) sensors, 8 optional real-facing sonar, 1, 2 or 3 hot-swappable batteries, and our complete software development kit. Add an optional internal computer or your own laptop and the robot is ready to go.

The base Pioneer 3 DX platform can reach speeds of 1.6 meters per second and carry a payload of up to 23 kg. The P3-DX base platform with included software has the ability to:

  • BE DRIVEN with keys or joystick
  • PLAN PATHS with gradient navigation
  • DISPLAY a map of its sonar and/or laser readings
  • LOCALIZE using sonar (with optional laser upgrade)
  • COMMUNICATE SENSOR & CONTROL information relating sonar, motor encoder, motor controls, user I/O, and battery charge data
  • RUN C/C PROGRAMS
  • TEST ACTIVITIES
  • QUICKLYSIMULATE BEHAVIORS OFFLINE with the simulator that accompanies each development environment

With optional Laser Mapping & Navigation System and MobileEyes, your robot can map buildings and constantly update its position within a few cm while traveling within mapped areas. With the appropriate optional accessories, you can view the robot%u2019s view remotely, speak, play and hear audio and send the robot on patrol.

The batteries are hot-swappable. If more runtime is desired, the P3-DX can be configured with a Docking System to run continuously. The Pioneer 3 DX is an all-purpose base, used for research and applications involving:

  • manipulation
  • cooperation and other behaviors

Pioneer 3 DX runs best on hard surfaces. It can traverse low sills and household power cords and climb most wheelchair ramps.
